Keyboards and other utilities are provided via special Language Kits available for System 9.

Install Language Kit

These instructions explain how to add Language Kits to a computer which already has System 9 installed.

1. Place the CD-ROM with the OS 9 software into your CD-ROM drive.
2. Double-click on the Mac OS Install icon. Click Continue on the Welcome window.
3. In the next window, confirm that the Destination Disk is the hard drive with System 9 installed on, then click the Select button then Add/Remove.
   NOTE: If you click on the Options button and get a "Perform Clean Installation" message in a pop-up window, click Cancel, then click Select.
4. You should now see the Custom Installation and Removal window.
5. Check the box next to Language Options, then choose Customized Installation from the dropdown menu.
6. A new Select Language Kits window will open. Place a check next to each Language Kit (e.g. "Software for the Arabic Language") you wish to install. You may need to scroll down to see all choices. Click OK to continue.
7. Finish the installation procedure, then restart your computer to activate the Language Kits.

Switch Keyboards

NOTE: The following Language Kits have been installed in the Penn State Student Computing Labs - Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew, Russian, Central European, Devanagari, and Gujarati.

To switch keyboards:

1. Open a software application such as a word processor, spread-sheet or any other application in which you need to enter text.
2. On the upper right portion of the screen, click on the American flag icon (). Use the drop-down menu to select a script.
3. The keyboard will be switched and an appropriate font will be selected within the application.
4. A flag icon corresponding to the keyboard will be displayed on the upper right.
5. To switch back to the U.S. keyboard or to some other keyboard, click on the flag icon on the upper right.

Activate Additional Keyboards

To make additional keyboards visible in the keyboard menu:

1. Go to the Apple Menu icon () on the upper left of your screen, then Control Panels » Keyboard.
   
   
   
   
2. Select a Script from the dropdown menu.
3. Place a check mark next to any keyboard you wish to make visible. Close the window to finalize
   NOTE: Only keyboards from installed Language Kits are available in the Keyboard Control Panel.

View Keyboard Layouts

To make additional keyboards visible in the keyboard menu:

1. Select a keyboard from the flag menu on the upper-right.
2. Go to the Apple Menu icon () on the upper left of your screen, then Key Caps.
3. To switch keyboard layouts, select an appropriate keyboard from the flag menu on the upper right.The script will be displayed.
   
   
   
4. To view the characters available under Shift, Option or Shift+Option, press these keys respectively to reveal the layout within KeyCaps.
5. Select one of the Fonts corresponding the the keyboard from the drop-down menu. Language Kit fonts are all listed at the bottom.
