Bio

I am an evolutionary ecologist. I study the evolution of sexual mating systems, specifically mixed mating systems of self-fertilization and outcrossing. I received my Ph.D. from the University of Alabama where I studied mixed mating in the only vertebrate genera that can self-fertilize, the mangrove rivulus fish (Kryptolebias marmoratus). Now, I am continuing work in mating system evolution with the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Prior to my Ph.D. I was a high school and middle school science teacher, spending most of that time teaching 7th grade science and coaching cross country and scholars’ bowl teams. I also have a Master’s degree in Biology from the University of Alabama Huntsville and a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee. While at Cumberland, I was also a student athletic trainer. I am originally from middle Tennessee (Nashville, Lebanon, Gallatin), but also lived in Knoxville, Tennessee when I was younger. Before moving to Atlanta in August 2020, I lived for about 20 years in Alabama. My husband I moved to Scranton in July 2024, where we are really enjoying the cooler weather and real winters.

Impact Statement

{

The most impactful thing I learned from the TLT program was how much technology was available. There really is just too much out there to navigate on our own. It was so helpful to have a curated list of technologies that other instructors were using and also learning how and when they were using them. As a new faculty, this was even more important because our time and energy is already depleted from prepping new courses, getting research programs running, and learning the policies and procedures at PSU. The program was so well organized and it felt like a safe place to ask questions. I really appreciate the time and effort it took to put the program together.
