Impact Statement
Participating in the opportunities provided by TLT is essential for new faculty members to learn the ropes at Penn State while discovering useful information to improve and enhance our teaching. One of the most beneficial TLT sessions I attended focused on the IMPACT deck, which is an exploratory, physical and online-based card game that aims to introduce students, faculty and staff of all ages and backgrounds to a wide variety of situations in which established and emerging technologies impact society. I used the IMPACT deck in my CAS 471: Intercultural Communication class as a lab where students could work as a group to determine how they would respond to specific communication-based situations, and they loved it! The randomness of the deck helped simulate real-life scenarios, and the game-based instruction kept things fun and interesting. I also found TLT’s Artificial Intelligence offerings to be helpful because they encouraged me to think about how I could use AI as my “creative co-worker” and encourage students to use it ethically as part of their coursework. AI Horizons allowed me to connect with other Penn State faculty using AI, which helped me discover new tips and tools that I could bring back to my own classroom. I am very thankful that Penn State provides its faculty with such excellent opportunities to grow and develop our skills while discovering how integrating new technology into our teaching can work for the benefit of our students.
