AI in Action: Assignment Edition

Program Description

Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT) will be piloting a new cohort program, AI in Action: Assignment Edition, for the Spring 2026 semester.

The goal of this program is to help faculty redesign their assignments for AI-resilience or AI-inclusion. Participants who complete the program may be eligible for an Endorsement, pending the program’s acceptance in the 2026 Provost Endorsement Program review.

This program is geared toward faculty who already feel comfortable using GenAI. Through this program, faculty will gain evidenced-based strategies and assessment examples to structurally redesign assignments for AI-resilience and AI-inclusion.

Discussion will center around effective scaffolding of assignments and strategies to increase critical thinking and reflective skills when using AI as well as scaffolding and strategies to make assignments “AI-proof.” Faculty will walk away with two fully-redesigned and peer-reviewed assignments for their course as well as a resource bank for future assignment design.

Program Outcomes

After completing this program, participants will be able to:

  • Analyze their existing assignments to identify where generative AI can support, hinder, or replace student learning processes.

  • Apply evidence-based strategies to redesign assignments for AI-resilience and AI-inclusion.

  • Develop scaffolded assignment structures that promote higher-order thinking, metacognition, and reflective skill-building.

All faculty and staff can enroll

50% Asynchronous and 50% synchronous experiences

Estimated time commitment: 10 – 12 hours

Offered each semester starting Spring 2026

Requires attendance of 5 workshops

Complete 2 Assignment Redesign Projects

Requirements

AI in Action: Assignment Edition is a combination of formal workshops, asynchronous design challenges, and peer review sessions designed to reimagine assignments in the age of Generative AI. Faculty will commit five hours of time to attend synchronous workshops/peer review sessions as well as approximately five hours of time in asynchronous time to redesign two separate assignments.

Five (5) synchronous hour virtual sessions via Zoom:

  • Workshop 1: Kickoff Meeting/Analyze Current Assignments
    (virtual, January 21, 2026; 12:15-1:15 pm)
  • Workshop 2: Designing “AI-Resistant” Assignments
    (virtual, February 4, 2026; 12:15-1:15 pm)
  • Workshop 3: Peer Review of AI-Resistant Assignments
    (virtual, February 18, 2026; 12:15-1:15 pm)
  • Workshop 4: Designing “AI-Inclusive” Assignments to Foster Critical Thinking
    (virtual, March 4, 2026; 12:15-1:15 pm)
  • Workshop 5: Peer Review of AI-Inclusive Assignments
