Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT) has partnered with the Center for Pedagogy in Arts and Design (C-PAD) on a new teaching lab inside Borland 113. C-PAD itself is a partnership between TLT and the College of Arts and Architecture and serves as a nexus for scholars, artists, designers, practitioners, and community members who share a common interest in learning and teaching through the arts.
The Borland 113 lab is part of a growing catalogue of active-learning, experimental spaces at University Park that allows for research into teaching and learning. It was designed with an eye towards technology and features that would be particularly useful for arts and design students, while other spaces are geared more toward general-purpose use.
The lab inside Borland 113 can accommodate up to 24 students at one time, and its design supports coursework related to everything from design and visual arts to the performing arts. With the help of this multifaceted classroom, C-PAD and TLT will research teaching and uncover teaching methods that advance student learning in arts and design disciplines and beyond. Additionally, the room is equipped with Zoom video conferencing software that enables distance learning and guest instruction from virtually anywhere in the world.
TLT’s learning spaces team, Penn State faculty, and C-PAD staff who teach in Borland 113 will engage in iterative cycles of teaching, reflection, adjustment, and more teaching.
It’s a thrill for C-PAD faculty and staff to have such a dynamic learning space at their disposal. We are going to take care to utilize all of the room’s resources and optimize the learning experience in the arts across disciplines.

Observation Room
A teacher observation room allows preservice teachers and other instructors to watch how faculty and students work within the space.
Technology-Rich Environment
Theatrical lighting, high-quality surround sound, an interactive whiteboard, and an interactive display for graphic designs are among the technologies that contribute to the space’s flexibility.
Flexible Furniture
Hight-adjustable tables on wheels with writable flip tops, mobile chairs, and portable, height-adjustable stools allow for various room configurations. The space is also outfitted with acoustical panels that can be applied to the whiteboards during musical or theatrical productions.
