Be a part of the 15th-annual Learning Design Summer Camp

Modern circumstances put a great emphasis on tackling issues around how teaching and learning happen. This July, for the fifteenth consecutive year, Learning Design Summer Camp (LDSC) will bring together the Penn State community to work on those issues.

In 2020, LDSC is scheduled for two half-day virtual format sessions on July 20 and 21. As in years past, the camp will be an informal, University-wide effort to explore innovative and creative ways to improve teaching and learning at Penn State. Registration for LDSC is free, open now, and will be available until July 14.

The University’s learning design community, including instructional designers, instructional production specialists, librarians, educational technologists, educational web and multimedia developers, and faculty, are cordially invited to register for this year’s online version of LDSC.

LDSC 2020 is a community partnership across the University including Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT), John A. Dutton e-Education Institute, Smeal College of Business e-Learning Design Innovation Group (eLDIG), Center for Teaching Excellence at Penn State Harrisburg, World Campus Learning Design, College of Agricultural Science’s Digital Education group, College of Arts and Architecture’s Office of Digital Learning, College of IST Learning Design, Office of the Vice President for Commonwealth Campuses, and University Libraries.

Cole Camplese, Northeastern University VP of Information Technology and CIO, returns to Penn State to deliver Learning Design Summer Camp Keynote

Cole Camplese, former senior director of Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT) and current vice president of information technology and chief information officer at Northeastern University, will deliver Learning Design Summer Camp’s (LDSC) opening keynote on July 23. LDSC is an annual, informal gathering of Penn State’s learning design community to cultivate methods of effectively contributing to the evolution of teaching and learning at Penn State.

Camplese is returning to Penn State to share with the learning design community as it discusses past, present, and emerging trends in teaching and learning. In his current role with Northeastern, Camplese leads the creation of strategic IT initiatives that align with Northeastern 2025, institutional culture, and long-term goals. He works closely across the campus community to deliver programs and services that enhance teaching, learning, research, and student activities.

A two-decade career in higher education has taken Camplese from University Park to Stony Brook University, to the University of Chicago, and now Northeastern. His leadership roles at each of those institutions have provided him valuable insight to be shared with this year’s LDSC attendees.

Additionally, Camplese is an Apple Distinguished Educator, selected for his innovative uses of technology in support of his teaching and administrative work. He has served on many industry advisory boards including both the NYERSERNet.org and .net boards, the Apple Digital Campus, and Junior Achievement. He is an established public speaker who strives to provide practical insight into the use of technologies to drive greater classroom engagement. He is a published author and has presented both practical and theoretical concepts at regional and national conferences.

Bart Pursel, assistant director of innovation with TLT, will co-present the keynote address with Camplese.

LDSC 2019 is hosted by TLT in partnership with the Smeal College of Business eLearning Design and Innovation Group (eLDIG), Center for Teaching Excellence at Penn State Harrisburg, College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) Office of Learning Design, Information Technology Learning and Development, John A. Dutton e-Education Institute, Department of Statistics, University Libraries, and World Campus Learning Design.

How learning happens at Penn State is constantly evolving. Those who contribute to the learning design process such as instructional designers, instructional production specialists, librarians, educational technologists, educational web and multimedia developers, and faculty will come together on the University Park campus this summer to discuss methods to effectively contribute to those evolutions.

Learning Design Summer Camp (LDSC) is an annual, informal gathering of Penn State’s learning design community, and it will be held this year on July 23 in Chambers Building. The event is hosted by Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT) in partnership with Business eLearning Design and Innovation Group, Center for Teaching Excellence at Harrisburg Campus, College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) Office of Learning Design, Information Technology Learning and Development (ITLD), John A. Dutton e-Education Institute, Department of Statistics, University Libraries, and World Campus Learning Design.

The theme for this year’s LDSC is “Back to the Future: Looking back, moving forward.” Event organizers are seeking presenters, and the call for proposals will open on May 1. The call will close on May 24, and the opening of registration will follow on June 3.

“We’re really looking forward to stimulating conversations at [LDSC] this year focused on what our community has done, what’s currently being done, and what will be done in the future,” said LDSC chair and College of IST instructional designer Chris Gamrat. “The informal, community-based design of this camp is ideal for sharing information and ideas about innovative ways to reshape how learning takes place at our University.”
