Top Hat visiting Penn State campuses to help increase engagement in courses

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Top Hat is partnering with Penn State’s Harrisburg, Altoona and Hazleton campuses to offer a series of workshops Feb. 27–29 designed to enhance faculty’s use of Top Hat.

Top Hat is an engagement platform that has tools educators and institutions can use to deliver interactive and personalized learning.

Each Top Hat On Campus Day will consist of an overview of the most powerful Top Hat features, including discussions and polling, assessment options and customizable content. There also will be faculty speakers discussing their experiences using Top Hat and a book fair to learn about Top Hat’s content capabilities, including open and affordable educational resources.

2022-2024 Teaching and Learning with Technology Faculty Fellows share insights

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Collaborative efforts between six Penn State instructors from two campuses and two colleges worked in teams with Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT) over the past two years as part of the 2022-24 TLT Faculty Fellows program. Their goal was to enrich the student engagement experience through technology. This included addressing themes such as affordability and inclusion, physi-digital space and radical creativity. Attributes such as these foster equitable opportunities, prepare students for dynamic workplaces and cultivate essential skills for the future.

Faculty Fellows are selected through an application process and collaborate with TLT to explore and enhance innovative opportunities in their teaching and research. They have the chance to disseminate their innovations widely within Penn State and the broader higher education community. Faculty Fellows strive to revamp courses by utilizing technology-driven teaching methods tailored to support University, campus or college objectives.

Mathematician, alumnus John Urschel to deliver 2024 TLT Symposium keynote

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — John Urschel, mathematician, former NFL offensive lineman and Penn State alumnus, will be the keynote speaker for Penn State’s 2024 Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT) Symposium on Saturday, March 23.

Urschel graduated from Penn State with bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Eberly College of Science. His address will explore how technology shaped him as a mathematician and continues to impact how he learns new material, teaches concepts to others and performs research. His keynote will be recorded for later viewing by anyone unable to attend.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Instructors who need fresh and innovative ideas to design a new and authentic course assignment, or who have an old assignment that needs a revamp are invited to apply to the Classroom-to-Community (C2C) program. Sponsored by Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT), C2C provides Penn State faculty the opportunity to critically evaluate their course assignments and transform traditional assignments into authentic, renewable experiences that foster digital fluency among students.

An authentic assignment experience immerses students in academic activities and tasks that require them to apply classroom concepts to practical, real-world contexts. In a C2C assignment, students achieve authentic experiences by identifying pressing issues within a community of interest and making a positive impact on those communities.To learn more click here.

Teaching with Technology virtual workshops return for spring 2024 semester

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT) will host a “Teaching with Technology” (TwT) virtual workshop series during the spring semester for instructors seeking to enhance their learning environments and engage students with University-approved technologies.

Several sessions will be devoted to exploring learning tools and their classroom applications. Topics will include Canvas learning tool integrations, artificial intelligence tools for teaching and learning, digital whiteboards, and technologies that support diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging practices.

Other sessions will focus on remote synchronous teaching, technologies for offering feedback, using generative artificial intelligence tools to enhance instructional materials, and an interactive game-based learning tool. To learn more click here.
